Trivia: Started off in written form as pilot for television. After the idea came to make the script a feature film, the script was revised and changed, and the feature film was approved for production.

Goofs: Continuity: During the scene where Wichita entices Columbus with a bottle of wine, we see Columbus standing near a surface covered in picture frames and knick knacks. When the camera is on him, the vase in the back has a lid that is sitting perfectly flat. The camera switches to Wichita and then back to Columbus who then moves the lid that is now crooked.

“Sanjuro, a wandering samurai enters a rural town in nineteenth century Japan. After learning from the innkeeper that the town is divided between two gangsters, he plays one side off against the other. His efforts are complicated by the arrival of the wily Unosuke, the son of one of the gangsters, who owns a revolver. Unosuke has Sanjuro beaten after he reunites an abducted woman with her husband and son, then massacres his father’s opponents. During the slaughter, the samurai escapes with the help of the innkeeper; but while recuperating at a nearby temple, he learns of innkeeper’s abduction by Unosuke, and returns to the town to confront him. Trivia: Akira Kurosawa challenged his assistant directors to come up with an image for the film to let Sanjuro know he was entering a bad town. He shot down all of their ideas, since all of them had already been done. Kurosawa himself then came up with the idea of the dog carrying the human hand.

Goofs: Crew or equipment visible: The wire used to pull the Yakuza’s cut kimono off can be seen as he gets up from the ground.
